Three Weakley County standout athlete’s and a host of others have been inducted into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame Saturday night in Nashville.
Tennessee Vols football players Chad Clifton and the late Graham Vowell, both of Martin and Ashley McElhiney Ayers of Gleason joined basketball player Chantel Anderson, umpire Chuck Merriwether, football player Haskel Stanback, football player and track athlete Willie Gault, baseball player Burnis “Wild Bill” Wright of Milan, football player Al Wilson of Jackson and tennis player Candy Early who were inducted.
Sports Hall of Fame board of directors Art Sparks and Wayne McCreight said this was an exceptional night for West Tennessee to be represented with five inductees is a tribute to the caliber of outstanding athletes West Tennessee has had and continues to have.
Weakley County now has five former athletes in the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame. They include Lin Dunn who was inducted in 2010 and Popeye Jones both of Dresden who was inducted in 2014.
A strong representation from Weakley County City and County government attended the ceremony.
