Murray State University is teaming up with Ohio University to help local high school students learn more about science, technology, engineering and math careers.
The partnership focuses on students near the Department of Energy’s Paducah and Portsmouth cleanup sites.
Students from McCracken County High School in Kentucky and schools in southern Ohio spent the school year learning about environmental cleanup efforts and working with university faculty and energy experts.
The students then created simplified reports explaining environmental conditions and cleanup work at the federal sites in language that’s easier for the public to understand.
Officials say the program is designed to build interest in STEM fields and encourage students to consider future careers in science, engineering and environmental work.
Murray State says the project also gives students hands-on learning opportunities through research, field trips and direct interaction with industry professionals.
