The Weakley County School Board is moving forward with a proposed energy-saving project that could help lower utility costs across the district.

The roughly $1.78 million project would add new building automation and HVAC controls throughout district buildings, along with LED lighting improvements at Martin Primary.

The district estimates the project could save about $167,000 during the first year, with a projected payback period of just over 10 years.

The new controls would help the district manage heating and cooling based on whether buildings are occupied or empty.

Officials discussed setting temperatures around 70 degrees in the winter and 72 degrees in the summer while buildings are in use.

The project must now go through the “EASY application” process and review before funding can be approved.
