The Tennessee Highway Patrol has issued a challenge to every Sheriff and Chief of Police across the state.

In conjunction with the Thanksgiving holiday travel period, the Highway Patrol has announced the Tennessee Interstate Challenge traffic safety initiative.

With a projection of higher roadway travel, Highway Patrol Colonel Matt Perry is asking all law enforcement agencies to have a strict tolerance for traffic violations.

To assist communities that do not have an interstate system, the Highway Patrol will also increase patrols on all secondary roadways.

During the Thanksgiving holiday period in 2022, the Highway Patrol arrested 89 people for driving under the influence, along with issuing 469 seat belt violations and 2,575 speeding citations.

During the holiday period, reports said 14 fatal accidents occurred, along with four pedestrian deaths.
