Tennessee residents are being reminded to have a burn permit.

To reduce wildland fire risks, a burn permit from the Tennessee Department of Agriculture Forestry Division is required through May 15th.

State Forester Heather Slayton said the permits are required to safeguard state residents, communities and natural resources.

The burn permits are free and can be obtained at burnsafetn.org.

The permits are available for burning leaf and/or brush piles along with various purposes such as land clearing, forestry, and agricultural applications.

Burning without a permit is a crime that carries penalties of up to 30 days in jail and/or a fine.
