The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration is moving toward reclassifying marijuana as a less dangerous drug.

The Justice Department proposal would recognize the medical uses of cannabis, but would not legalize marijuana for recreational use.

While the process could take an extended amount of time, Obion County General Sessions Judge Jimmy Smith was asked how the change would affect Tennessee.(AUDIO)

Judge Smith said he doesn’t see the legalization of recreational marijuana in the state.(AUDIO)

As a member of the Obion and Weakley County Drug Court, Judge Smith said changes to the status of marijuana is concerning.(AUDIO)

The process of changing marijuana from Schedule 1 to a less tightly regulated Schedule 3 would face several hoops, including a review by the White House Office of Budget, a public comment period and review from an administrative judge.
