The Tornadoes clinched a tie for the District 14A regular season championship with Greenfield by winning their ninth league game in 10 tries.
Both Union City and the ‘Jackets sported identical 14A records as the two teams split their regular season series – each winning on their respective homefield.
Greenfield assumed the top seed in the upcoming postseason tournament, however, via a one-run advantage in the cumulative score of the regular season games. The Tornadoes will be the second seed in the event, which will be played at Elam Stadium and begin on April 28.
Union City (15-8) beat Gleason for the second time in as many days on Tuesday as freshman Jack Theobald went 3-for-3, drove in a run, and scored another. Ben Kail singled twice and scored, while Sam Jones had a hit and two RBIs.
Logan Dawkins scored two runs and had a single to go along with a ribbie.
Senior right-hander Troy Joslin whiffed 11 Bulldog batters in six innings to notch his fifth pitching victory in six decisions. Joslin gave up just one run, four singles, and two walks. Copeland Chism got the final three outs, allowing an unearned run.
The Tornadoes will play at Madison Academic in Jackson on Friday at 11 a.m.

UC 11, Bruceton 0
The Tornadoes outclassed homestanding Bruceton in a mercy-rule rout that was called at halftime.
Marcos Landeros found the net six times, while Khazarion Scates tallied twice for Union City, which improved to 5-4 heading into Thursday’s critical district match at McKenzie.
Jose Pastor, Juan Carlos Barron, and Alex Landeros tacked on goals for the victors.
Lucas Ajanel-Baten set up three UC goals with assists, while Scates, Alex Landeros, Juan Carlos Barron, Silverio Acevedo, Brandon Najeme, Carter Wilson, and Gavin Morgan were also credited with assists.
Bruceton was unable to attempt a shot on goal in the match.
Union City reserves got ample playing time in the last several minutes of the contest.

UC teams dominate at Mayfield
Union City’s girls’ and boys’ teams easily won first place at the Mayfield Quad Meet Tuesday in a competition that included Graves County, South Fulton, and the host team.
Winning efforts by three relay teams for both Union City squads highlighted the Tornadoes’ performances.
For the girls, the 4X800 unit of Ainsley Beard, Ainsley Sadler, Madie Theobald, and Jayla Turner crossed the finish line first. So, too, did the 4X200 team of Ca’Lae Ervin, Indeya Hogsett, Chloe Hubbard, and Hayden Marshall. The 4X100 foursome of Ervin, Hogsett, Hubbard, and Katana Bonds was also first.
On the boys’ side, the 4X800 team of Adrian Crawford, Woodrow McKinnis, Rushdon Howell, and Logan Puckett claimed honors. The 4X200 and 4X100 teams of Crawford, Shontorius Fuller, Tayshun Gentry, and D.J. Evans each won first.
Marshall won the 400-meter run, and Theobald led the pack in the 800. Carda Ellis was first in the triple jump, Alyssia Davis beat all competition in the high jump, and Bonds set a new program record (17’5”) in the long jump.
Debrionna Jones won the shot put and the discus, establishing a new mark (115 feet) in the discus.
Jaedyn Sims took first place in the long jump and triple jump for the Twister boys. McKinnis won the 1600-meter run and the 800 meters, and Kyle Price triumphed in the discus. Evans was the winner in the hurdles.
Union City will host 16 teams in an Open Meet on Thursday.

Union City bested Obion County for the second time in as many days at Poplar Meadows Country Club.
Sam Kissell again posted the best score of the nine-hole match for the Tornadoes, carding a 49. Stephen Herrell and Hudson Reeves each shot 56 for UC, while Garrison Bunch came in with a 57.
The Lady Twisters’ Lili Petty was the girls’ medalist for the second day in a row, coming in with a 52. Annie Beth Cruce finished with a 58.
In the six-hole jayvee match, Pyper Prather posted the low total with a 38 for Union City. McKinley Reed shot 39, and Maddie Parr finished with a 41.
Union City’s next match is Monday vs. Dyersburg at The Farms.
