The Union City girls’ tennis team took over sole possession of first place in District 14A and handed Obion Central its first loss with a 5-2 victory Tuesday at the Middle School courts.
School Communications Director Mike Hutchens said the Lady Tornadoes won four of five singles matches and the No. 1 doubles competition to improve to 10-3 overall and a perfect 5-0 in league play.
Twin sisters Davey and Dani Frankum triumphed in singles play, then teamed to win 8-1 as a tandem. Allie Vincent and Lexi Petty were also winners in singles for the Twister girls.
“Our girls came out with a lot more energy today and I was proud of them and their effort,” first-year Union City head coach Maddie Britt said following the match.
The boys’ team got steady play from Paul Martin Tohn, but dropped a 5-2 decision to the Rebels.
Tohn rallied to win a tie-breaker (7-3) and claim his singles match, then paired with Foster Rodgers to win in doubles by an 8-5 score.
The Tornadoes fell to 3-9 on the season.
