Obion County Director of Schools Talks About the Closing of Black Oak Elementary

School bells will no longer ring at Black Oak Elementary after June 30th.

On Saturday morning in a brief called meeting, Obion County School Board members voted 6-to-1 to close the school in Hornbeak, with students to consolidate to Hillcrest or Lake Road.

The following year, students in PreK-thru-5th grade will also consolidate to Lake Road and Hillcrest, as Ridgemont will become the Obion County Middle School.

Obion County Director of School’s Tim Watkins told Thunderbolt News about the process following the school closing vote.(AUDIO)

 

Director Watkins was asked about the number of Black Oak staff members who would remain in the system.(AUDIO)

 

The Director also explained the responsibilities of the soon to be vacant building.(AUDIO)

 

Director Watkins said the bottom line to the school consolidation was the lack of adequate local funding.(AUDIO)

 

The actual last day of regular school for Black Oak students is Thursday, with Summer school to then begin.
