The Union City Golden Tornadoes enter this fall season, with a new challenge on the horizon.
Union City has moved back up to AA football and is gearing up for a new region with Milan, Halls, Gibson County, Jackson Central Merry, Huntingdon and Trenton Peabody.
Entering his sixth season of coaching the Golden Tornadoes, Nick Markle is preparing his team for the challenge.
The Golden Tornadoes have a unique style of football that Markle has embraced throughout the years of success he has had at the head of his program.
Markle has an overall record of 43-19 as the head coach of Union City and believes in the culture and community being built by players and families.
Before Union City, Markle spent time four years as head coach at Munford. He also coached at UC ends during an earlier two-year stint, overseeing fullbacks and defensive when the Purple and Gold won the first of its four state titles back in 2009.
Markle had various seniors graduate from his team last spring, including key lineman and skill position players. He also shared his quarterback left the program as a transfer to now regional foe, Milan. Kirben Thompson is expected to begin the season as the signal caller.
Sophomore Jack Theobald will serve as second string quarterback. Other players Markle expects to have a big season are Aiden Reed, Andre Small, Rylan Robinson, and Ethan Rodgers.
Markle currently has 39 players on the team with nine seniors.
The Golden Tornadoes participate in various scrimmages before the start of the season. On August 1st they hosted Lake County, and August 8th they will travel to Paducah to face McCracken County. Union City will finish the preseason by hosting the Union City Jamboree on August 15th against Covington.
Union City’s first game of the season will be August 22nd on the road against Jackson Christian.
