The Union City Police Department has issued a scam alert for area residents.
On Wednesday, a Union City resident received a phone call from an individual who stated they were with the Obion County Grand Jury.
The caller said Judge Jimmy Smith had issued an arrest warrant due to them missing a court date.
The scammer informed the victim that $8,000 could be paid to the court system to avoid a physical arrest.
When the victim advised they did not have that much money, the caller said a partial payment of $1,000 would avoid them from going to jail.
The victim agreed to pay the lower amount, and were instructed to use a Bitcoin kiosk to make the transaction.
Residents are reminded that the Obion County court does not use Bitcoin, Venmo or any other E currency, and will not notify anyone by telephone of outstanding warrants or citations.
