WKRN reports, investigators released new information Friday after exhuming the body of Pauline Mullins Pusser, the wife of former McNairy County Sheriff Buford Pusser.
For nearly 60 years, Pauline was believed to have been shot and killed in an ambush meant for her husband while riding in his car.
Authorities now say Pauline was shot outside the vehicle then brought into the vehicle. Her death is believed to be an “act of intimate, deliberate violence.”
Inconsistencies in Buford Pusser’s story, recent statements provided by those associated with the investigation, Pauline Pusser’s autopsy, and evidence examined by TBI personnel led to the new finding.
Those interested in the case can read the case file in its entirety, which has been entered into the public record. Chancellor Yancey Freeman with the UT Martin added that the university will house the collection of files and evidence.
Buford Pusser was known for cracking down on bootlegging, prostitution and gambling as the McNairy County sheriff. His law enforcement career inspired multiple Hollywood movies.
The sheriff continues to have a large influence on the community, including the annual Buford Pusser Festival.
