A large crowd gathered at the Hickman City Cemetery on Friday to honor a Civil War hero.
A monument was unveiled for John P. Hughey, of Hickman, who was issued the Congressional Medal of Honor by President Abraham Lincoln.
Following a long unsuccessful search for relatives and the grave site of Hughey, a monument was placed in Hickman, where he lived, worked and passed away at the age of 64.
Friday’s event included a 21-gun salute, the playing of taps, the folding and presentation of the American Flag, and speech by Kentucky American Legion Commander John Garret.
Garret said emotions could be seen from veterans and others in attendance.(AUDIO)
