In all, the tornado covered over 165 miles in almost three hours, making it the ninth longest tornado path ever recorded in the U.S, claiming 57 lives and injuring over 500 people.
The tornado was also the deadliest in U.S. history to occur in the month of December.
The storm uprooted thousands of trees. Numerous agricultural buildings and electrical and communication lines were also destroyed.
