A Weakley County deputy was killed early Friday morning during an on-duty shooting in Martin.
Sheriff Terry McDade said the officer involved was Derrick Bonham, of Greenfield, who was originally from East Tennessee.
Martin Police Chief Phillip Fuqua said Martin officers were called just before 3:00 this morning for possible shots fired at the Days Inn, located at 800 University Street.
Chief Fuqua said deputies from Weakley County then responded to assist Martin police.
At approximately 3:09, deputies observed an occupied vehicle leaving the nearby Pocket’s Shell Station, with the driver of the vehicle firing shots that struck Deputy Bonham.
Martin police officers responded to the shooting scene and took the shooting suspect into custody, as Deputy Bonham was transported to Volunteer Community Hospital and later pronounced deceased.
Deputy Bonham and his wife were the parents of three children.
He was 30 days from serving two years with the Weakley County Sheriff’s Office.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigations was contacted and will serve as the lead investigators in the fatal shooting.
