Today is Ash Wednesday!
Ash Wednesday is celebrated as the beginning of Lent, a 40-day period of prayer, fasting, and repentance leading to Easter, marking Christians’ mortality and need for spiritual renewal through Christ’s sacrifice, symbolized by receiving ashes in the shape of a cross on the forehead.
It’s a time for spiritual reflection, confessing sins, and preparing to celebrate Jesus’ resurrection.
Throughout Lent, Christians are not supposed to eat meat and are to fast one full meal and two small meals daily.
Specific things to avoid beginning Ash Wednesday include large feasts, and showing off your fast. Christians should instead eat simply, focus inward, and focus on the meaning behind the tradition.
