Union City claimed a pair of hard-fought tennis victories over Obion County Central on Thursday, winning 6-1 in the girls’ and 4-3 in boys’ play.
Union City School Communications Director Mike Hutchens said both Tornado squads are now (3-0) overall on the young season, (2-0) in District 14A after sweeping the league matches.
Paul Martin Tohn and Kipton Powers had a hand in three of the four Tornadoes boys’ wins.
They teamed to beat Sam Cunningham and Bronson Pergande 8-5 to help the Twisters to a 2-0 lead after doubles play, then won singles matches against their respective opponents at the three- and four-seeds by identical 8-4 scores.
Union City’s No. 1 doubles team, Kobe Kirk and Byron Abbott, also won in a back-and-forth match, edging Braden Elam and A.J. Gammons by a 9-7 count.
The Lady Tornadoes, meanwhile, claimed victories at the 2 (Allie Vincent), 3 (Josie Ross), 4 (Emma Jane Rice), and 5 (Briley Kate McKinney) seeds in individual play after winning both doubles encounters with the Obion County girls.
Rice and McKinney each won 8-2, Ross came out on top 8-4, and Vincent triumphed 8-6.
Bertie Jenkins and Ross teamed to beat Lindsey Webb and Micah Poore in a thrilling tie-breaker (9-8, 7-4), and Vincent and McKinney gave Union City a second doubles victory, 8-4.
