Morehead Wins Over UT Martin Baseball

baseball-3
The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team scored four runs in the top of the ninth inning but couldn’t complete its comeback and ultimately fell 12-8 to Morehead State in the series finale.
TJ Dunsford (home run) led the Skyhawks (15-16, 3-6 Ohio Valley Conference) in hits with three while Cameron Greene (triple, double, RBI) and JT Popick also had multi-hit performances (two RBIs). Garner Anderson hit a homer and TJ Grines added two stolen bases for the UT Martin offense.
Maxwell Schumacher (2-3) fanned four batters over three innings while Will Turner (three innings, three strikeouts), Gabe Bryant (one inning, no hits allowed, no runs allowed) and Silas Jones (one inning, one strikeout) pitched out of the bullpen.
Morehead State (15-16, 4-5 OVC) struck first but the Skyhawks leveled the score when Dunsford started the top of the second with a solo shot. With UT Martin trailing in the fourth, Anderson hit his sixth long ball of the year to cut into the Eagle lead.
Turner put a zero on the board in the home half of the fifth courtesy of a strikeout and a 5-4-3 double play. Morehead State added to its lead, however the Skyhawk offense remained persistent. Greene smacked an RBI triple to left center and Popick plated his third basemen on a single to center field. Bryant worked a scoreless seventh off a flyout and another 5-4-3 double play turned by the UT Martin infield.
Down in the ninth inning, the Skyhawks wouldn’t go down easy. Popick brought in Greene from a single and Andrew Davis helped two more runs come home on a fielder’s choice. Colten Payton would plate Grines with a sacrifice fly, but UT Martin was unable to complete the comeback in the final frame.
The Skyhawks return to action on Tuesday, April 7 at 4 p.m. when they play at North Alabama.
