Union City’s girls’ tennis team is on the doorstep of another trip to the state tournament.
School Communications Director Mike Hutchens said the Lady Tornadoes won their seventh straight regional championship and the 18th in program history with a 4-0 shutout of visiting Chester County on Thursday afternoon.
Now (18-3) on the season, and with district and region titles on their resume, the Twister girls will aim for their 16th all-time state appearance when they play on the road at Lakeland Prep next Thursday.
Match time and site are still to be determined.
Union City had little trouble beating a Chester County squad it had topped earlier in the year, winning four singles matches to clinch before doubles play was set to begin.
“My girls came out firing in their first set, and never backed down even though they faced tougher competition in the second set,” second-year head coach Maddie Britt claimed. “They all played their own style of tennis and fought for every point. I couldn’t be prouder of this group. They showed how motivated they are to continue their success.”
The Lady Tornadoes’ quality depth was again on display as they were in complete control at the Nos. 3, 4, and 5 seeds.
Josie Ross, Emma Jane Rice, and Briley Kate McKinney each won convincingly in straight sets, as did No. 2 seed Allie Vincent, who was pushed in her second set before prevailing.
Top seed Bertie Jenkins was still on the court and locked in a tight battle with Abbie Green when the match was called.
