A contractor for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet will begin geotechnical drilling near the U.S. 51 Ohio River “Cairo” Bridge on May 6th.
The drilling will start on the Illinois side, and is part of preliminary work for the U.S. 51 Bridge Replacement Project.
Transportation reports said the geotechnical drilling will help engineers better understand soil and settlement conditions where new piers and on-land abutments are planned.
Crews will perform drilling operations both on and off the highway in multiple locations, with work on the Illinois side expected to continue through approximately May 16th.
Upon completion in Illinois, the drilling study will move to the Kentucky side.
Flaggers and trucks with arrow boards will be present to help guide motorists to shift into the open lane.
