Tennessee State Veterinarian Dr. Samantha Beaty is warning animal owners about a new invasive pest that poses a threat to livestock and pets.
The New World Screwworm is a parasitic fly whose larvae feed on the living tissue of warm-blooded animals, causing infected wounds.
They are slightly larger than house flies and have metallic blue/green bodies, orange eyes, and three black stripes on their backs.
The Screwworms have been detected in Mexico and pose a threat to the U.S. The USDA recently announced the suspension of live cattle, horse, and bison imports along the southern border.
Signs of infection include wounds that won’t heal, signs of discomfort or unusual behavior, and infestation in wounds.
