A new initiative is in place for organ transplants after findings that donors are at risk of premature death.

As part of the reform, organ procurement organizations are now required to follow strict corrective actions and make changes that safeguard potential donors from premature death.

An investigation in Kentucky revealed, more than 70 canceled organ removals were recorded due to patients showing signs of revival.

The New York Times reports, 55 medical workers in 19 states reported witnessing at least one case of premature organ harvesting.  Some claim providers had administered drugs to “hasten the death” of the donors.

Several families have stated that surgeons tried to initiate organ retrievals while patients were still alive or improving.
