The tradition-rich Union City Band Program has more promising musicians on the way.
School Communications Director Mike Hutchens said a total of 49 students from the 7th and 8th grade band program at the Middle School recently participated in the West Tennessee School and Band Association’s annual Concert Performance Assessment.
The event was hosted at UT Martin.
There were 14 eighth graders and 35 seventh graders from who received Superior ratings on stage as well as in the sight-reading portion of the evaluation.
Middle School Band Director Joe Davis expressed his pleasure and pride in his students, calling it “an honor” to receive the Superior designation.
“Adjudicators that assess our band are veteran educators with highly trained ears, and they know specifically what to look for and listen for,” Davis said.
“We look at the ratings we receive from this event to gauge how our students are responding to instruction in the classroom. This is a culmination of all the elements that are taught throughout the year.”
Davis was quick to add that more improvement was his next goal.
“As our Spring Concert and the Concert Performance Assessment is over, work does not stop,” Davis claimed. “Our last leg in our spring performance season is the Solo and Ensemble Festival. As always, we encourage all of our students to participate in this annual event, which helps them grow into strong individual players, and overall, it increases the level of musicianship within the ensemble.
“Once all spring performances are complete, we continue to reinforce and introduce new music concepts until summer break.”
