Shelby County Mayor Lee Harris has declared a local state of emergency for the protection of Memphis residents.
Channel 3 reports, local governments and law enforcement agencies have been told to expect increased arrests at nearly 200% of current daily rates.
Sheriff’s Office has reached out to commissioners about the population of the County jail reaching historic levels.
The Shelby County Commission is now required to provide at least $1.5 million to assist with the current challenges.
The Mayor insists the state of emergency continue until the end of Memphis Safe Task Force operations or until detention facility populations are reduced to the capacity level or below.
