A bill that requires doctors to report on transgender-related healthcare has passed the Tennessee Senate.
As written, the bill would require health care providers and insurers to track gender transition and de-transition treatments.
It has sparked protests from activists, led by the Tennessee Equality Project.
They argue it targets non-cis-gender patients and raises privacy concerns. A cis-gender patient is a patient who’s gender identity matches the sex they were assigned.
The bill’s sponsors say it aims to provide transparency for those who choose to de-transition.
The Senate passed the bill 24 to 7 after adding amendments to address some privacy issues. The House must vote again to reconcile the bill’s versions.
